Our Stone Cottage Visit

On Tuesday morning our class had a visit to the Stone Cottage. I was very excited because I have never seen the inside before and was very interested. We walked our way down the path to lead us to the gate, and we waited for cars to pass so we could cross.

After arriving at the Stone Cottage we were greeted by a lady named Terry and she introduced us to Patrick. Terry started telling us some of the histories as she let us inside.

When we went inside she showed us a tour of the house. The first place we went was the living room and a lady called Josephine was sitting on the sofa. Terry started showing us some portraits of some people in the olden days. She also showed us some embroidery and I thought that the women in the olden days were really talented because it was really pretty and had lots of stitches.

The next room was the downstairs bedroom. The downstairs bedroom had a crib with two baby dolls. One of them was really old and the other one was not that old. Terry started to tell us some of the things inside the rooms. One thing was used for the men to use as a toilet. It looks like a bowl which the women would clean the next day.

After the downstairs bedroom we went to the kitchen where there was really cool stuff. In the kitchen Terry showed us what they used for washing clothes and it looked interesting because it really doesn’t look like the laundry we have today. The next item were bellows and these are used to push air into the fire to keep it alight and to reach a high enough temperature to make the iron hot enough to use.

The next rooms were upstairs. The stairs are really steep so we had to hold on to the rail. I was kind of scared that I might fall. After we went upstairs we went to the artefacts room which were very interesting. They were cool because they were in perfect condition from the olden days. There was an old computer, a perfume bottle and a really cool crystal.

The next room was the kids’ bedroom and there was a mannequin in it looking out the window. At first I thought it was real until I saw it had no face. There was also a crib next to it and inside there was a baby doll and on the bed there was clothing for sleeping.

I loved this trip because there were so many things to see and hear about so close to our school. Everyday we go passed that house and we never knew anything about it. Now I can tell my family about it.

My Cycling Experience

On the first day of school this term, I was very happy because we got an opportunity to have cycling lessons. The instructors were Kyla and Kate. We only had one lesson and there were two groups. The less confident people went to Kate’s side and those who knew how to ride when with Kyla. Before we went on our bikes we checked if our bikes were safe or not. We had to guess what  A,B, C, D, Q meant. A is for Air in the tyres, B is for brakes, C is for chain and control, D is for drop and Q is for quick release. After we did all those steps we went onto the court.
Then Kyla said that we were playing ‘Red Light, Green light’ while on our bikes. It was really fun for me. After that game we played a “park our bike” game. After that we played a shrinking box activity and in the end we played this game where you have to have a bean bag on your head and if it falls off you have to come back and get it. This was to teach us to keep our heads up when we ride.
After that we played this game called ” buddy up” when we had to have a partner that was roughly our size. After we  found our partners, Kyla and Kate told us what to do: like partner up, partner down, partner step back, partner under. After we did  the game we all said thank you and goodbye to Kyla and Kate. It was a really fun and memorable day.

My swimming experiences

For the last 2 weeks my school got to take swimming lessons. Our first swimming lesson was on Tuesday, the first of August and they ended on Monday 14 of August. At first I was nervous to try swimming again because I didn’t know how to swim that well and I had forgotten from last year.

I tried doing it still and I became much better at swimming, the new strokes I learnt for swimming were freestyle, back strokes, frog kick and floating. I don’t remember all the tricks though. My instructors were Parys and Christine. I was really sad when it was the last day of swimming lessons yesterday and I couldn’t go swimming that day because I forgot got bring my stuff for swimming. I was able to go to all the other lessons and on Friday my lesson was when we had to go on a boat and try to survive learning some tricks to stay afloat.

The other part when we had to go underneath the boat, we were allowed to scream and it was my favourite one.The next lesson was when you get picked on what team you were in and you try to save them when they are drowning  (not real drowning though). We each got to take turns and each person you save got to help you and save more of your teammates

My favorite stroke was backstroke because it was the only one I worked well on.

Matariki

Last week we made Matariki stars out of wool and cardboard. It was hard making it on the first try for me so I had to try again. The hardest part was when we made the lines around the circle like on a clock because they had to be even. It was good to see the star come after we had gone around the clock a few times weaving with the wool.

We also learned the game of Knuckle bones which children used to play a long time ago in New Zealand and we found out in other places around the world too.

\fun fact: Matariki is one of the closest star clusters to earth and this year is the first time we have had a public holiday to celebrate Matariki in New Zealand.

Characterisation of Storm Boy

I am young, carefree and cheerful but never lonely. I like to collect shells and go and watch the sun set. I am not afraid of storms. I like to play near the beach and wander alone. I wish all birds and other animals could live as free and safely as we do in the Coorong. I have one friend and his name is Fingerbone Bill. My dad is called Hideaway Tom. We are all happy to be together in nature.

 I am…………………. Storm boy

Our Ki o rahi tournament

Yesterday Mr.Bell had an excellent idea for us to play in a Ki o Rahi tournament and it was the very first tournament at St Patrick’s School. Rooms 6, 7 and 8 were taking part. The tournament was going to happen after morning tea. When morning tea ended we had to go under the canopy to get into our houses. The houses are Rimu, Kauri, Totara and Rata. Sadly I got injured when it was morning tea and couldn’t play but I still had fun watching the houses play. There were 8 rounds  and some people had 1 or 2 rounds.

I loved watching the tournament and everyone played fairly and had a good time. Thanks coach Trey for being the referee and giving Willietony the $100 from Monopoly. It was funny.

ANZAC Biscuits

Last Thursday the class ate some ANZAC biscuits and we had to describe them. I learned that they were made over a hundred years ago during World War 1, when the women baked them and sent them to the soldiers as a treat. I was surprised that there is still a recipe for ANZAC biscuits. The ingredients were butter, flour, golden syrup, and baking soda. I think some people add coconut in the cookie. When I picked it up the crumbs started to fall, making a mess. I was nervous at first because I thought it was going to taste rough as a rock. When I tasted it the biscuit exploded in my mouth making me want even more. It tasted as sweet as chocolate covered strawberries. For one second I thought I was in heaven. I enjoyed the cookie even though I couldn’t have more than one. I decided when I get home I’m going to ask my mom if she can try baking them.

My 175 Jubilee celebration

On Friday when I woke up my mom made me some pancakes for breakfast. After that I took a shower then changed for school. I was so excited because we were going to celebrate our 175th Jubilee.

When we went to mass we did all the normal things we do at mass. After that the priest asked us some questions about St Patrick.

After mass we went outside to see the time capsule and when we opened it there were lots of old pictures from 25 years ago inside.

After church we went to class and then the bell rang so we went outside to eat our morning tea. After morning tea the whole school went to the canopy and the principal put us into certain teams to play with.

After we had finished we ate some Popsicles. It was a great celebration of St Patrick’s day.
